An axis along which the data pool can be explored.
A theme kind is an attribute *declared as explorable*. File size is an attribute you would filter or sort by, but nobody explores the four-megabyte theme, so attributes stay ordinary properties and only declared ones become axes. That declaration is one record, not a separate mechanism.
The same declaration drives both uses: it is the axis for exploration, and it supplies the respect R when a theme is used for grouping.
